Samantha Sullenger's 6th Grade Classes!

Hidden Figures Book study and presentations is my favorite unit for 6th grade English. This unit covers reading, writing, public speaking, and social studies standards, while simultaneously including science and math. During this unit, we read about and discuss space, aerodynamics, historical events, and the lives of four women who broke barriers and helped the United States reach the moon. Students then pick a topic related to the book, conduct research, build a presentation, and teach the class about their topic. I love the student’s creativity and own analysis of events from the book. Students must research, create a bibliography, write three paragraphs about their topic, present the information to the class, and be good audience members for their peers. It is highly engaging and interactive for all students. I look forward to this unit every year! My students make me proud.

The following are the standards we covered for this Unit:

 Reading Informational Text:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.3 Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes).

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.6.9 Compare and contrast one author's presentation of events with that of another (e.g., a memoir written by and a biography on the same person).

 Writing:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.9 Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

 Public Speaking:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.1.C Pose and respond to specific questions with elaboration and detail by making comments that contribute to the topic, text, or issue under discussion.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.6.5 Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, images, music, sound) and visual displays in presentations to clarify information.

 Social Studies:

6.2. Categorize and sequence significant people, places, events, and ideas in history using both chronological and conceptual graphic organizers.

6.20. Demonstrate relationships between personal events and historical events
