On 9/22/2022, three sections of the U.S. Government classes at Hot Springs High School were able to take a field trip to Hamilton Military Museum in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Framed as an opportunity to see how the executive branch has performed its function as the head of the military through the lens of history, the students received an invaluable opportunity to see the artifacts and hear the stories of soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen who have served our nation. From the American Revolution to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they were able to see the impact that abstract policy and programs have on the lives of real Americans, both living and dead. The museum staff provided an invaluable service in leading groups of students around the museum and telling them the backstories and histories of the exhibits; afterwards, they expressed their joy in being able to help teach the next generation about their past, and shared their belief that knowing such things was more important than ever. The students, for their part, greatly enjoyed the trip. While most of them had visited the museum at some point in their lives, revisiting it as near-adults saw them approach it with a changed perspective, and the capacity to take in more of the lessons the museum had to offer.

HSHS was honored to host Tiger Alumni and Arrey native, Nichole McGuire as a guest speaker today. Nichole is currently earning a dual degree at UNM to obtain her MD and a master’s in public health simultaneously and will graduate in December. Nichole is also an aspiring psychiatrist and is in the process of applying to psychiatry residency this year. Nichole encouraged students to develop a strong work ethic, get involved in their community and develop solid study habits. Nichole shared that growing up in a rural area was an asset. She encouraged students to take advantage of the small-town opportunities and local support. Nichole encouraged students to find their passion and don’t be afraid to put in the time to accomplish their goals. Nichole plans to practice in New Mexico and contribute back to other small rural communities in our state. Thank you Nichole and HSHS is proud of you!!
